Fish Fridays Could be Bad for Your Health
Every year, one out of four Americans experiences a foodborne illness, with seafood responsible for 18 to 20 percent. Americans are consuming more seafood than ever, and 81 percent of it is imported. Almost half of the seafood produced around the world today comes from industrial fish farms, where bad conditions encourage disease and parasites to spread. To combat this, fish farmers may use antibiotics and chemicals that can leave residues in seafood. Our new report reveals that the U.S. government fails to adequately inspect seafood imports for contaminants, filth, and salmonella.

Fish Story
After a series of safety scares about imported seafood in 2006 and 2007, U.S. consumers are recognizing that more than 80 percent, about 10.7 billion pounds of the seafood they eat, comes from outside the United States. Much of it is imported from Asia and Latin America, regions that have potentially unsafe production practices. Read our report, "Fish Story."

Tell Congress: No Industrial Fish Farms
The National Offshore Aquaculture Act of 2007 (H.R. 2010 and S. 1609), would open our oceans to industrial fish farms and could harm ocean life, fishing communities, and consumer health.
Raising a pound of farmed fish takes two to six pounds of wild fish, further decimating wild populations. The aquaculture industry also uses antibiotics, chemicals, and hormones, and could undercut small-scale fishermen.
Tell Congress to protect your health, fishing communities and the oceans.
