Food & Water Watch Asks Consumers to Avoid Imported Shrimp

Singing Carols ShotWHAT: Dressed in festive attire and shrimp hats, Food & Water Watch activists will sing “shrimp-mas” carols to warn holiday shoppers away from imported, industrially-produced shrimp.

WHY: Shrimp has become the most popular seafood in the United States. The typical American eats three-and-a-half pounds of shrimp a year – especially during the holiday season. Consumer health risks of eating imported, industrially-produced shrimp may include neurological damages from ingesting pesticides, allergic responses to penicillin residues or intestinal infections by an antibiotic-resistant pathogen, such as E. coli.

Food & Water Watch will also release a new report, Suspicious Shrimp, which highlights the dangers of eating industrially-produced shrimp and calls on consumers to ask questions about where and how their shrimp was produced. It will be available on the Food & Water Watch website on December 19th.

Just HatWHEN: 5 PM, Tuesday, December 19th

WHERE
: Outside the Gallery Place – Chinatown Metro Station, 7th & H Street Exit.

PHOTO / AUDIO OPPORTUNITY: Activists will sing holiday carols modified to educate consumers of the health risks associated with industrially-produced shrimp. Carolers will be dressed in festive attire and will wear hats bearing stuffed shrimp characters.
