Grassroots Organizing & Advocacy Intern

• Healthy Fish & Oceans –– Protect our marine environment while challenging the privatization of ocean resources. Campaign for safe seafood and support local fishing communities.
• Clean Public Water — Protect water as a public resource rather than a commodity sold to the highest bidder. Campaign for more support for our public water systems, while exposing the myths and dangers of the bottled water industry.
• Sustainable Food — Challenge factory farms and other industrialized agriculture, and promote local, sustainable food systems.

Responsibilities may include

• Building strategic coalitions with religious groups, labor groups, elected officials, citizen activists, businesses and students
• Coordinating campaign events to engage citizens and pressure targets
• Assisting in media outreach to educate millions of people
• Producing printed and online materials such as action alerts, newsletters, and activist guides
• Researching emerging issues to move campaigns forward
• Bottom-lining at least one element of the campaign
• Maintain strong records of work and assist with database development
• Hold regular office hours and participate in weekly meetings with Campaign staff

Requirements
Strong interest in Food & Water Watch issues and commitment to social change. Strong verbal and written communication and time management skills. Sense of humor and ability to work well in a team. Desire to develop campaign organizing skills. Internships are typically a minimum of 10 weeks; full-time and part-time opportunities available

Research Intern

The research team is responsible for providing information, analysis and written materials to support Food & Water Watch campaigns. You’ll have the opportunity to work on one or more of our three program areas:

• Healthy Fish & Oceans –– Protect our marine environment while challenging the privatization of ocean resources. Campaign for safe seafood and support local fishing communities.
• Clean Public Water — Protect water as a public resource rather than a commodity sold to the highest bidder. Campaign for more support for our public water systems, while exposing the myths and dangers of the bottled water industry.
• Sustainable Food — Challenge factory farms and other industrialized agriculture, and promote local, sustainable food systems.

Responsibilities may include

• Research both corporations and government (federal, state, and local) to help our team craft reports, briefing papers, and articles for the general public, media, NGOs, elected officials, and government agencies.
• Assist researchers with data collection, synthesis, and analysis
• Write short printed materials on sustainable agriculture, fish, and water issues
• Research emerging issues to move campaigns forward
• Maintain strong records of work and assist with database development
• Hold regular office hours and participate in weekly meetings with Research team

Requirements
Strong interest in Food & Water Watch issues and commitment to social change. Strong communication and time management skills. Sense of humor and ability to work well in a team. Experience in academic and corporate research is a plus, as is a background in any of the following: environmental science and policy, agriculture and natural resources management, food and nutrition, economics, political science, federal policy, Geographic Information Systems, computer database management. Internships are typically a minimum of 10 weeks; full-time and part-time opportunities available.

Communications Intern

The Food & Water Watch communications staff is responsible for developing and implementing new and traditional media outreach strategies for national, regional and local issue campaigns. We are accepting applications for a new hands-on position that will offer great opportunities for developing skills and experience in public interest issue advocacy.

Responsibilities may include

• Participating in planning, development and implementation of national, state and local media campaigns.
• Pitching Food & Water Watch issues and reports to reporters, columnists, editorial writers, and news and talk show producers.
  
• Assisting with regular information flow to these contacts including e-mailing, blast faxing, and mailing of pertinent information such as news releases and editorial board memos.
• Assisting in organizing news conferences or other media events in Washington, DC.
• Writing media and organizing materials such as newsletter articles, news advisories, talking points, letters to the editor, and responses to web news or blogs.
• Maintaining media databases and research new media contacts.
• Monitoring news coverage and maintain news clips file.
• Assisting in Food & Water Watch website promotion strategies such as posting on social networking and news discussions sites.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Strong interest in Food & Water Watch issues and commitment to social change. Interest in how the media works and what is newsworthy. Interest in how media and communications strategies advance a public interest agenda. Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal skills are required. Seeking an enthusiastic self-starter and problem–solver who can handle multiple tasks at once. Experience in social issue organizing, communications, or journalism helpful.

Social Media Intern

The Social Media Intern coordinates the online marketing and communications campaign for a major documentary on the fight for social justice around community water.  The Social Media Intern is part of the communications department and reports to the Internet Strategist and is matrixed to the film director/staff.

Responsibilities include (and are not limited to):

• Website updates
• Social networking participation, community outreach
• List management and communications
• Research
• Coordination with staff, filmmakers, activists
• Online advertising
• Stats and reporting
• Campus coordinating
• Grow marketing ideas in the social Web/media arena
• Project management
• Administrative tasks
