Act now to protect local water
As the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. RWE,
an energy company, is the 78th largest corporation in the world, with
annual revenues of more than $50 billion. Based in Germany, RWE owns
more than 640 subsidiaries worldwide, and operates in more than 120
countries.
Yet RWE has been shunning its responsibilities for
years. RWE’s water subsidiary, Thames Water, was named England’s worst
polluter in two of the past three years. And residents in 11 U.S.
states have protested the company’s unusually high rate increases.
The
responsibility finally proved too great. In November 2005, less than
three years after entering the water business in the United States, RWE
announced its exit. CEO Harry Roels says that it makes more sense for
his company to focus on its core industry, energy.
Citizens
and elected officials around the country couldn’t agree more. They are
lining up to be the next owners and bring their water under local
control. “It is to everyone’s advantage,” says Mayor Ron Littlefield of
Chattanooga, Tenn.
